The aim of the course is to restore an understanding of the progressive relationship of the different limbs of yoga for the purification of the body and mind. Participants will gain a broad knowledge of the diverse systems that comprise and inform the yoga tradition. The course will include:

  • Practice and theory covering both hatha yoga & meditation
  • Therapeutic Yoga for a range of common and chronic health problems
  • Specialised training in Kaya chikitsa and Kaya samvadhana therapeutic yoga and massage (Bio Neuron Feedback Mechanism)
  • Asana practice from beginner to advanced level. The focus will be on understanding the principles that underlie the sequencing of asanas.
  • Important kriya, pranayama, mudra and bandana techniques not commonly practiced in the West
  • Sessions led by visiting faculty, covering topics such as anatomy and physiology, Ayurveda, Acupressure and Sujok
  • A four day intensive meditation course based on the teachings of Buddha, Patanjali, and Shankaracharya.
  • Introduction to Indian philosophy

Dr. ALV KUMAR- Lead Teacher

Dr. Kumar’s experience spans five decades. His teaching is informed by his lifelong learning, extensive knowledge and deep understanding of Indian yoga traditions. Dr. Kumar has studied in over 37 yoga ashrams with some of India’s most renowned teachers. The first teachers to introduce him to meditation were close disciples of Swami Sivananda, Satyananda Saraswati and Vishnudevananda with whom Dr. Kumar worked closely. Following this he was trained at the Bihar School of Yoga and in various Kriya Yoga traditions, including Babaji Kriya yoga. He went on to study directly with BKSIyengar and then Pattabhi Jois. As a meditation practitioner and teacher, he has studied in all the main Indian traditions, and in Buddhist traditions in Thailand, Sri Lanka and Myanmar. His interest in teaching came about as a result of a car crash in 1992 that resulted in complete paralysis of the lower body. He used his knowledge of yoga to restore his body to full health. Following this experience he decided to dedicate as much time as possible to teaching yoga to heal both body and mind. As well as being a reputed scientist, Dr. Kumar has taught more than 15,000 people in India on a voluntary basis. He was recently honoured with the Bharat Jyoti Award and the Glory of India Award for his outstanding public service in the field of yoga. Dr. Kumar has been teaching in Britain since 2007 and has many committed students from the Uk where he runs annual retreats and workshops. He has trained yoga teachers from the USA, Germany, Italy, China and Australia and is a Yoga Alliance registered E-RYT trainer. 


Catriona originally trained with Godfrey Devereux at The Life Centre; she then went on to complete a BWY Diploma course. Her main practise was initially Astanga Vinyasa and she practised regularly with John Scott for 2 years. In 1996 she met Shandor Remete who became her major influence. Catriona went on to study with Swami Veda Bharati (disciple of Swami Rama) and Dr Rolf Sovik, spiritual director of The Himalayan Institute. Catriona has attended Dr Sovik’s advanced trainings and recently  ompleted a 3-year Subtle Integration Therapy course. She has been studying meditation with Kumar since 2011. Catriona is a Board Member and part of the teaching faculty on The Life Centre Teacher Training Programme and teaches primarily at The Life Centre, Yoga Campus and Triyoga in London. She is registered 500-hour Yoga Alliance teacher.

A 200 hour yoga teacher training qualification or equivalent yoga/ meditation experience is preferred. If you have been practicing yoga for some time but have not previously undertaken any teacher training, you are welcome to apply for the course and give details of your prior experience. 


Traditional Yoga is registered with the Yoga Alliance as a Registered Yoga School (RYS).  Upon completion you will receive a 500 hour Traditional Yoga Advanced Teacher Training Certificate that you will be eligible to register your training with the Yoga Alliance.

A  200 hour Traditional Yoga Training certificate can be attained by attending either our 15 day Meditation and Yoga course in December in Karnataka, or a 200 hour part time teacher training course in Hyderabad. The part-time courses take place throughout the year, please contact us for more details.

Course Objectives
  • To restore an understanding of the progressive relationship of the different limbs of yoga for the purification of the body and mind.
  • To gain a broad knowledge of the diverse systems that comprise and inform the yoga tradition.
  • To understand the principles that underlie the correct sequencing of asanas in order to implement this in the designing of yoga classes.
  • To introduce important kriya, pranayama, mudra and bandana techniques not commonly practiced in the West.
  • To give an overview of alternative health therapies and dietary treatments, including ayurveda, so that yoga teachers are better equipped to guide their students towards good health.
  • To learn therapeutic yoga techniques that can be used to treat others, particularly kayachikitsa and kayasamvadhana.
  • To understand the function and purpose of different types of meditation, from subjective through to objective techniques, in order to make informed choices for ones own practice or when teaching meditation.
  • To explore through both theory and practice raja yoga as taught by Patanajali.
  • To progress on the path of yoga
  • To learn to spread the teachings of yoga and practice teaching yoga through teacher role playing activities
  • To become a true yogi

Code of Conduct
  • For the duration of the course all students resolve to practice Yama, the code of conduct outlined by Patanjali. Yama involves maintaining Ahimsa, (non violence /abstaining from harming/ abusing/ using harsh words) ; Satya, (speaking truth/ abstaining from lies); Asteya, (abstaining from stealing); Brahmacharya, (abstaining from sexual misconduct); Aparigraaha, (abstaining from intoxicants including tobacco and alcohol).
  • We maintain noble silence during the teaching hours and on the premises where the course is taking place. This means students should avoid communication with fellow students and instead maintain mindfulness throughout the day. Communication is only permitted with the teacher and volunteers unless the class is interactive. The aim of this is to allow focus and awareness to stay within in order to deepen the meditative aspect of the practice. When the mind is calm and quiet it increases the ability to absorb information and learn.
  • Noble silence need not be maintained outside of teaching hours, however students are expected to maintain Yama at all times.

  • Suryanamaskaras from various traditions and related mantras
  • Asanas, the importance of correct sequencing using the system of vargas and the energy flow principle based on the five elements.
  • Angabandanas and angachalanas
  • Asanas as treatment for disease ( disease index from Hatha Ratnavali)
  • Mudra and Bandhana
  • Pranayamas, including lesser known and advanced techniques, both aerobic and anaerobic respiratory techniques.Cyclic Breathing Technique

  • Chakra balancing
  • In depth analysis of each chakra
  • The system of nadis
  • The hatha yoga lineage, historical and contemporary systems of yoga.
